Where should you buy your appliances?

When it comes to buying a major appliance like a refrigerator, washing machine or anything else that’s too big to fit in your car, picking the right retailer is nearly as important as picking the right brand or model. We have compiled this list of questions that will help guide you on your path towards finding the perfect retailer!

Is that sale price really a good deal?

Ever heard "Best price ever! Sale must end Monday!" "Special rates for your organisation" or "Up to half price. Limited stocks". Many people think that they are getting a great deal when they hear these phrases, but in reality, the price might be the same or even more expensive than what you would find in any other store. So before you run off and buy something, make sure to do a quick price comparison online!

Local independent or big box corporate?

Don't discount the regional or independent retailer, you'll be surprised how often you will find better prices and more personalised service. These smaller businesses are usually family-owned and operated, so they take pride in their work and want to make sure that you're happy with your purchase. They generally have lower overheads and have good purchase agreements through buying groups. They can, and do, compete on price. Whereas at larger corporate stores you're just another number in the books, they have to fund high priced business executives, and their main goal is to make as much money off of each sale as possible.

What about the delivery?

If you’re buying a refrigerator or any other large appliance, you need to make sure they have someone who can deliver it. If not, this could be an extra cost that isn't included in your purchase price. Make sure to ask what options are available before making your final decision! Many retailers will deliver for free or at a discounted rate but some only offer this service if you spend over a certain amount of money.

What is their after-sales service like?

Before purchasing an appliance, it's important to think about what happens if something goes wrong with your product later on down the line. Does the retailer have good reviews when it comes to customer satisfaction? Do they have a good warranty and return policy? Can you access a real person who can help you or are you left to wait in line at a customer service call centre. You could be left high and dry if something goes wrong. So do your homework before making your purchase!

Do they offer extended warranties?

Some retailers offer an extended warranty. Don't be tempted. It's primarily a retailer add-on to improve their profit margin. At Folders we refuse to offer them. It is important to note that most major appliance purchases come with at least two years of manufacturer's parts and labour coverage. You are also paying for protection you're already entitled to under the Consumer Guarantee Act where you are entitled to expect your new appliance to perform well past the standard manufacturer's warranty.

Do they have a price beat guarantee?

Price beat guarantees are becoming more and more popular as a way to entice customers into making a purchase. The retailer will match the price of any authorised dealer in New Zealand. This is a great way to make sure you're getting the best deal possible!

Have they a good selection of options to choose from?

When it comes to appliances, you want to make sure you have a good selection to choose from. This will ensure that you're able to find the perfect appliance for your needs. Make sure to visit the retailer's website first as they may not always have the models you want on the shop floor. Some smaller stores may have a huge range but don't have the space to display everything. They still may have the best price and best service.

Online or in-store. What's best?

If you're in the market for a new appliance and looking to save some money, then buying online is generally your best option. In fact around a fifth of all appliances are purchased online these days and it's likely to continue to grow. The convenience of shopping from your desk and the ability to compare prices across many different stores make purchasing appliances online a no-brainer.

Summary

There are a lot of things to think about when purchasing a major appliance, but by asking yourself these questions, you'll be well on your way to finding the perfect retailer for you! Happy shopping!:)
